Church Etiquette: How to Dress Kids and Where to Buy Formal Dresses

06/10/2019

Often in life, some events and occasions cause us to stop and think, “what should I wear?” It can be a conundrum that questions both your personal style and the dress code etiquette.

Going to church is no exception, whether it’s a regular Sunday or if you’re attending a special service or event. Below, we look at a few key occasions that call for every member of the family to dress the part — including the little ones!

How to Dress Kids for Church

Of course, keep in mind that everyone is welcome, no matter what you wear, but it’s a good rule of thumb to aim for smart-casual attire if you haven’t been before and it's a regular Sunday service. While your formal “Sunday best” clothes are no longer the expected standard, it’s courteous to ensure that your child’s outfit is tidy and presentable.

Leave the tracksuit bottoms and Disney t-shirts behind and, instead, opt to dress your little ones in a skirt and cardigan set or slacks and a nice t-shirt. As long as your child is comfortable and it’s an outfit that wouldn’t look amiss in a restaurant, you’ll blend in just fine.

It’s especially interesting to note that putting on special clothes can trigger a positive psychological response in kids. They look down and feel dressed up, so they know that their behaviour should match.

Church Special Occasions

Throughout the year, there are several special occasions on the church calendar, including Christenings, Easter and Christmas. It’s a lovely idea to plan outfits to match the event theme.

Christenings

Previously on the David Charles Childrenswear blog, we have looked at how to dress for a Christening, and we suggested that a pretty party dress or short-sleeve shirt and bow tie are great choices, as they adhere to the formality of the event. Crucially, they also give your little one the freedom to move around comfortably.

These items don’t have to be cream or white, but to suit the happy mood of this special occasion, light pastel colours can do no wrong.

Christmas

Christmas is a magical moment for children and parents alike, so this a wonderful time to attend a church service — especially if there’s a nativity play to watch.

If there’s an occasion to dress up your little ladies and gentlemen to the nines, it’s at Christmas, and this is one day of the year when wearing your Sunday best is a no-brainer. Deep wine reds or jewel-like emerald colours are the perfect seasonal palette. View our post on dressing your child for Christmas Day for inspiration.

Easter

Easter brings the promise of pretty blossom trees, brightly wrapped chocolate eggs, warm family gatherings and, usually, a classic Easter Sunday church service.

Like Christmas, this is another wonderful opportunity for your little girl to wear a gorgeous special occasion dress — think gentle lemon tones and bouncy ruffles. As there’s bound to be an egg surprise or two, add a basket bag accessory — bonus points if there are pockets in her dress!
